Keynote speech by Deputy Chief of Mission Joseph R. Donovan at AEON Beef

We are very pleased that Jusco, and their parent company, AEON, Japan’s largest retailer, are again offering U.S. beef to their Japanese customers.
We know that this decision was made based on their good understanding of the safety, quality, and taste of U.S. beef.
Last year, U.S. beef shipments to Japan grew by 240%. It would have been higher if not for the trade restrictions.
We believe this is further proof that Japanese consumers are ready to buy wholesome, quality U.S. beef.
And in this time of rising consumer prices, especially for food, it is important that Japanese consumers have access to U.S. beef, which is a great value.
I personally believe the coming year will be a good one for U.S. beef imports both in terms of import policies and, even more importantly, in terms of consumer confidence and image.
I was also glad to see that Jusco and AEON are selling U.S. beef in time for the yakiniku season. Grilled beef is one of my favorites. I’m sure this is something your customers will appreciate.
To our Japanese friends and customers, I would like to say thank you for your patience, thank you for your trust, and thank you for you continued business.
