USDA/AMS Granted Japan Organic Recognition:

July 1, 2008

On May 19, 2008 USDA/AMS determined that the assessment system for organic products used by the Labeling and Standard Division (LSD) of MAFF is sufficient to ensure conformity with the technical standards of USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP), pending successful completion of an on-site visit. With this arrangement Japanese organic products are able to be certified to NOP standards by Japanese JAS accredited organic certifiers and to sell their products in the United States (click here for the AMS/NOP recognition letter). Japan produced 236,051 metric tons of organic products in 2006.
