About Us

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offices in Japan help U.S. exporters of food, agriculture, feed, and natural resources navigate the Japanese market. We report on market trends and developments, provide opportunities to connect with Japanese buyers, and offer guidance on export regulations and standards. USDA is represented in Japan by the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS)

FAS works to improve foreign market access for U.S. agricultural, forestry and fishery products, build new markets, improve the competitive position of U.S. agriculture in the global marketplace, and provide food aid and technical assistance to foreign countries.

Office of Agricultural Affairs (OAA)

The FAS Office of Agricultural Affairs in Tokyo is responsible for trade policy and commodity analysis, and assists with market access and technical phytosanitary issues.

Agricultural Trade Offices (ATO)

The FAS Agricultural Trade Offices (ATO) in Tokyo and Osaka work directly with U.S. companies and trade associations to help them gain the knowledge and contacts needed to successfully export to Japan. The ATOs also sponsor activities to introduce U.S. products to key Japanese retailers, food service and food processing companies, coordinate U.S. participation in trade shows, and serve as a window to the Japanese market.

Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is responsible for safeguarding U.S. agricultural resources. APHIS accomplishes its mission through science based regulatory actions on animal and plant health. These efforts support the overall mission of USDA to protect and promote food, agriculture, and natural resources.
